"Even though I have traveled to many inaccessible places in the world, I never experienced the sense of pristine wilderness as I found in the Kamchatka outback."

Beyond Siberia, between the Pacific and the sea of Ochotsk, 11 timezones east from Europe sits the biggest penisula in Asia; Kamtjatka. Mythical and mysterius it is also one of the top flyfishingdestinations in the world. Here you will find pristine wilderness, active volcanos, hot springs and an abundance of wildlife. Add to that about 400 untoucht rivers with incredible numbers of salmon, char and trout.

Welcome to Fishingnorths destination Kamchatka…

The rivers flowing in to the sea of Okhotsk are typically small to medium i size, crystalclear and wery productive, hosting huge numbers of fish. This is best explained by the massive relase of protein from the migration (and death) of different species of Pacific salmon. Chasing the illusive wild rainbow trout (that can reach up to 15 lb) is to many anglers the reason to vistit the region. Add to that seamingly endless schools of artic char and chances to hook wild silver salmon you will have the fishing of your dreams!

Travel, itinerary & map

Traveling to Kamchatka and it´s main city Petropavlovsk is an adventure in itself. From Scandinavia the flight is approx. 13 hours due east via Moscow. Don´t worry, the Aeroflot flights these days are just fine! Once we arrive we will stay at a B&B run by our local agent in the area and continue the next day by helicopter to our destination for the week. Fishingnorth offers fishing trips to the rivers Kolpakova, Savan, Vorovskaya and Zhupanova. By rafting the rivers with rubber dinghies anglers are given the opportunity to see and fish 30-50 km of waters during 6 fishing days. On the trip, besides 7-8 anglers, are our knowledgeable Russian guides together with a gourmet chef and they provide for our every need.

Itinerary for travel and fishing as follows:
Day 0: Departure from Scandinavia to Moscow, change of flight and approx. 9-10 hours of flight time to Kamchatka and overnight in Petropavlovsk.
Day 1: Transfer to airport and helicopter to designated river. (Approx. 1 hour). Arrival at destination, inflation of rafts, departure and fishing.
Day 2-7: Full days of fishing. Transportation by raft downstream, fishing on the best spots. Stop for lunch, dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 8: Helicopter-transport back to Petropavlovsk, overnight at B&B and dinner.
Day 9-10: Flight from Kamchatka via Moscow to Scandinavia. Arrival late afternoon.

Accommodation and food

A big mess tent is used for kitchen and area for breakfast and dinner, lunch is usually served outdoors. Our guides will arrange for sleeping tents on each new campsite. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared each day by a qualified chef who will make both Russian specialities and international food.  Homemade pasta filled with fresh char, local soups and wild duck may appear on the menu (if the guide can handle his shotgun!) . Talk about gastronomy in the best possible location! Be sure tough to bring a warm sleeping bag and comfortable mattress for cold nights.

Fishing and equipment

Fishing is often concentrated to ”hot spots” as drop-offs, hollows, tree-overhangs and backwaters where larger fish may be located. In particular the wild rainbow trout can be illusive and tricky to get to bite. The rivers in Kamchatka are often pretty easy to wade but deep hollows and loose sediment can be a problem. Be careful! When it comes to technique with a fly-rod a normal overhand cast is mainly used but a more varied casts may give you an edge in tricky positions. A great deal of the excitement fishing the river of Kamchatka is that you never really know what will hit your fly.. After a number of 3-4 pound char a 12-15 pound silver-salmon can suddenly strike!

Recommended fishing gear are single-hand rods in #6-8 and 9-10 ft. With an average depth of 1-3 meters combined with medium to low current you seldom need anything else but a fully floating line or a clear-tip intermediate to reach the fish. A pair of normal fly-reels with 100-150 m. 20 lb. backing will do just fine. Bring tippets 0,25-0,35 mm of 9-12 ft. You will need waders, wading-bots, a fishing-jacket and why not a wading-staff. Have plenty of warm clothes and also a down jacket. For the full equipment list see below.

Your choice off flies is always a source of debate. You could probably use a number of patterns to attract fish but the ones that seem to work better than others are similar to the ones used for steelhead in Alaska and B.C for example. A few tips: Egg sucking leech in size 4-6, Purple Dreger in size4-8, Popsicle in purple/pink on tube, egg-flies, floating mouse-imitation in size 2-4. For more patterns see fly gallery.
